Assessment at The Tanto International School forms part of the daily and weekly work for teachers. It is essential for all educators to know the skills, knowledge, understanding and experiences of each child in order to help them take the next steps in the the learning journey. Assessment does not mean only testing or exams. Assessment is part of a high quality educational approach, called formative assessment, by which teachers are always looking to find out what children already know and can do so that they can inform their daily and weekly planning: questioning, observations, challenges and problem solving enable teachers to assess what learning should be next for a child, group or class.
Ensuring that children are stimulated and progress successfully through the curriculum is a priority for our staff. Formative assessment is an essential tool in any school, however it plays an even more important role in an international environment. It is key to meeting the individual needs of our diverse group of children.
Alongside this, the school uses summative assessment opportunities to identify progress that children have made with the knowledge, skills and understanding of a topic. Annual assessments, most of which are external standardized assessments, allow opportunities to identify development of understanding and skills each year. The school uses the highly regarded NFER progress assessments and GL Assessments to ensure a standard and consistent approach to assessment.
The Tanto International School has a positive approach to reporting information to parents throughout the academic year. The teaching staff hold two formal parent conferences a year, as well as providing four written reports, which enable teachers to share each child's interests, skills and understanding within the curriculum and wider learning opportunities.
